EEAP Webinar # 29- Driving Energy Efficiency in MSMEs – Sustainable Technologies and Financial De-risking for Market Transformation

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are central to employment, industrial growth, and local economic development across the Asia-Pacific region. However, many MSMEs continue to rely on inefficient motors, heating and cooling systems, boilers, compressors, and production equipment. Limited technical capacity, high upfront costs, uncertainty about savings, and restricted access to affordable finance often prevent businesses from adopting energy-efficient technologies, even when the long-term economic and environmental benefits are clear.

This webinar will examine two complementary dimensions of accelerating energy efficiency in MSMEs. The first presentation, “Sustainable Energy Efficiency Technologies for Improved Energy Performance in MSMEs,” will explore practical and emerging technologies that can reduce energy consumption, improve productivity, and strengthen competitiveness. Drawing on experience with industrial energy efficiency, motors, cooling and heating, heat pumps, waste-heat recovery, and clean-energy technologies, the presentation will highlight opportunities for technology assessment, implementation, and scale-up in MSME settings.

The second presentation, “Role of Financial De-Risking Instruments for Energy Efficiency in Transforming the Market,” will focus on the financial and market barriers that slow investment in energy efficiency. It will examine how instruments such as credit guarantees, concessional finance, risk-sharing facilities, dedicated credit lines, performance-based models, project aggregation, and technical assistance can reduce perceived risks and encourage greater participation by financial institutions, technology providers, energy service companies, and MSMEs.

Together, the presentations will show that market transformation requires both suitable technologies and financing mechanisms that make those technologies accessible and investable. The session will offer practical insights for policymakers, financial institutions, industry associations, evaluators, development partners, technology providers, and MSMEs seeking to scale energy efficiency and improve energy performance across the region.
